The Secrets of the Self – Asrár-i Khudí – by Muhammad Iqbal
The Secrets of the Self, also referred to as Asrár-i Khudí, is a Sufi poem published in Lahore in 1915. The author, Muhammad Iqbal, was an Indian Muslim who had the unique opportunity to study modern philosophy, earning degrees from the Universities of Cambridge and Munich. His dissertation on the evolution of metaphysics in Persia, which provided an insightful overview, was published as a book in 1908. Since then, he has formulated his own philosophical ideas. Although Asrár-i Khudí does not present a systematic account of his philosophy, it conveys his concepts in an engaging and accessible manner. Unlike Hindu philosophers who appeal to reason when discussing the unity of being, Iqbal, akin to Persian poets who express the same doctrine, seeks to resonate with the heart. Muhammad Iqbal is often regarded as the "spiritual father of Pakistan."
