The Sufism of the Rubaiyat or The Secret of the Great Paradox

Norton F. W. Hazeldine's second edition of The Sufism of the Rubaiyat or The Secret of the Great Paradox, published in 1906, explores the concept of Rubaiyat, a Persian term that signifies "reading between the lines," "a meaning within a meaning," or simply a paradox. This work features translations of exquisite mystical verses authored by the Sufi mystic, mathematician, astronomer, and poet Omar Khayyam (980 – 1037), who is also referred to as "Omar The Tentmaker." Zamakhshari described him as "the philosopher of the world." Various sources indicate that he spent many years teaching the philosophy of Ibn Sina in his birthplace, Nishapur. His mausoleum is a remarkable example of Persian architecture, attracting numerous visitors annually. Beyond Iran and Persian-speaking regions, Omar Khayyam's influence on literature and society has been significant, primarily through translations and scholarly works. Thomas Hyde (1636–1703) was the first to present Omar Khayyam's teachings to the English-speaking audience.
